From Alex White, Unions ACT on air pollution and ACT Health’s weak air laws including their statement that “Due to a lack of heavy industry the ACT does not monitor sulfur dioxide for the NEPM.” (NEPM: National Environment Protection Measures).
All Canberrans have the right to breathe clean air. But unfortunately the laws that are supposed to protect us are too weak, and the regulators are not properly resourced.
The ACT’s air pollution laws are some of the worst in Australia. There are too few protections for working people exposed to hazardous and poisonous fumes, and too few protections for the community.
The ACT Government must strengthen air pollution laws to ensure that workers and the community are not exposed to toxic or poisonous air-borne pollutants.
